Writing the Story

coming up with an idea

In the process of coming up with an idea for a story, I asked myself what my strengths are. I knew that I wanted to write about something close to my heart, something I had experience with. I soon realized that I’m good at putting my thoughts and feelings into words and that I’m not afraid to show myself vulnerable. I therefore wasn’t worried about revealing too much about my personal life and past experiences.

Writing the actual script was a long process. The most challenging part was to convey this constraining feeling of loneliness and frustration Mia feels during the first couple of scenes. It was also harder than expected to convey my message with metaphorical images.

CHARACTERS & COLOUR

The first concepts of the character design and illustration style were highly different from the final outcome. When I first started developing an illustration style, I was going for a much more cartoonish version. However, I soon realized that the design and bright colours didn’t match the rather dark mood and theme of the film. Therefore, I decided to go for a more realistic drawing style and darker colours.

LIVE STUDY

Recording reference footage was very important for the whole animation process. I recorded myself with a webcam while acting out the scenes. This helped me figure out the movements and make them look natural.
